IT'S STILL IN OUR HANDS... that's the theme for this year's Nelson Mandela International Day, celebrated on July 18th. It reminds us of the joy to be found in serving others, and the progress that can be achieved through unity and a commitment to justice.  We hope that wherever Witsies are in the US, they look for ways to serve their neighborhoods. And to give back however they can.

ALUMNI PROFILE: "FROM JOZI TO ATLANTA - THAMSANQA NDLOVU"
We asked US Witsie, Thamsanqa Ndlovu to tell us about his journey from Joburg to Atlanta, GA:

I attended Wits between 2011 – 2015, completing a Bachelor of Arts degree and thereafter my Bachelor of Laws. After practising briefly as an attorney in Melrose Arch at Reed Hope Phillips (now PwC Legal), I quickly realized that I had an interest in business rather than law. It’s against that backdrop that I decided to study business and found a suitable school in Boston that was focused on transformative business education specifically for individuals looking for a career change.

Although I didn’t practie law for long, my philosophical and legal training gained from Wits have been key differentiators in my market research and consulting career. I can look at issues through the lenses of both international business and law, which typically leads to better client outcomes. It’s not everyday that a lawyer becomes a savvy business analyst. In fact, we are notoriously unaccustomed to business, so Wits has afforded me a rare feat.

Presently, I run a market research agency based in Atlanta called Datadvise. Our core mission is to help organizations develop data driven strategies in decision-making. We do this by helping them understand various factors affecting their business’s operating environment. This can be anything from market trends, competitors, customer insights to technologies that could affect the space.

WATCH: WITS' LATEST NEWS IN SIXTY SECONDS - In this episode, we celebrate former Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof. Loyiso Nongxa's honorary doctorate for his leadership in mathematics and higher education. We congratulate five Wits academics on winning National Science and Technology Awards, and recognise Dr Muhammad Ahsan Mahboob, Head of the Wits Sibanye-Stillwater Digital Mining Laboratory, for earning his PhD in Engineering. We explore the spread of superbugs using mobile and genomic data and highlight a 90-million-year-old novel beetle species fossil discovery in Botswana.
