Whether you still call it Autumn, or now say Fall... you have to admit it is a beautiful time of the year, here in the USA.
As we go about getting ready for Halloween, and the upcoming holiday season, it is good to remember our roots, and to pay our good fortune forward.
WITS VC VISITS THE US
Boston

As part of the global Centenary Celebrations, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits University, travelled to the US (and Canada) in September 2022. It was an exciting trip, including a very special Time Square event (see more in our September edition).
In the first picture above, Prof Vilakazi poses alongside Prof Hazel Sive, member of the Wits Fund board and a Dean at Northeastern University; and Dr David Fine. During the trip, the VC hosted alumni reunions in Boston, NYC and in Toronto.
There was nothing but positive feedback from attendees, who left inspired and hopeful for the future of Wits and South Africa.

Wits student leader wins prestigious travel bursary
Karabo Asala is set to travel to Europe as part of a travel bursary for leadership development.

Asala, a final year student in the School of Therapeutic Sciences will be jetting off to tour the UK later this year as part of the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary. Asala triumphed over 70 other Witsies who applied.

Academically strong and a formidable leader, Asala was recently elected on to the 2022/23 Wits SRC. She is the current Deputy Chairperson of the Health Sciences Student Faculty Council, Chairperson of the Nursing Student Council, and Treasurer of the Noswal Hall House Committee, all the while supporting undergraduate students as an academic advisor in her residence.

The focus of the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary is leadership development and is awarded to South African students as well as junior academic staff members who are academically strong, demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities and serve in their communities.

“I am thrilled about this opportunity”, says Asala. “I believe that this opportunity will expose me to a broader worldview outside of my own. I look forward to engaging the leadership elements of the programme, which I think will be vital to my various roles on campus as well as my future career. I also look forward to meeting new people and growing my networks,” she added.
