Martin Colman
Martin Colman (Wits MBBCh 1964, MMed 1971) retired in 2017 after a 53-year career in academic medicine and was named Emeritus Chair of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas.
From 1996 until his retirement, he held the John Sealy Distinguished Centennial Chair in Radiation Oncology and was Professor with Tenure and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology.
Before that, from 1977 to 1996, Dr. Colman was Director of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, Irvine where he led the successful effort to establish full departmental status for Radiation Oncology, which had previously been a Division within the Department of Radiological Sciences. He retired from the University of California with the title of Emeritus Professor of Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Colman has been elected to the Fellowships of the Royal College of Radiology, the American College of Radiology, the American College of Radiation Oncology, and the American Society of Radiation Oncology, and served many years as a Board Examiner in Radiation Oncology for the American Board of Radiology.
Together with his wife Elinor (also a Witsie), Martin is a driving force for the Wits medical graduates in the US and is an important connector and influencer. They were both featured by the Alumni office as part of the #Witsies4life campaign.
