John Chalsty, MBA 1957 (Harvard); MSc 1954 (Wits); BSc (Hons) 1953 (Wits)
John Chalsty is a Founder and Chairman of Muirfield Capital Management, LLC, and a senior advisor at Credit Suisse First Boston. Previously, he served as the President and Chairman of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) from 1985-2000.
Born in Port Elizabeth, John first came to the United States in 1955 after winning the Stanvac Scholarship to study in the U.S. After graduating with High Distinction from Harvard Business School, he began his career at Standard Oil (now Exxon) where he worked for 12 years before joining DLJ in 1969. He has served on numerous corporate, civic and philanthropic boards.
John has been honored in numerous ways for his wide-ranging contributions to corporate and civil life. He has received the Ellis Island Foundation’s Medal of Honor and has also been honored by the Citizens Committee for New York City and was a recipient of Boston College’s President’s Medal of Excellence, given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through personal or professional achievements. In 1995, he was the chairman of the New York Host Committee for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.
John’s generosity has also been extended to Wits. The Chalsty Centre at Wits Oliver Schreiner School of Law is named in his honor. He is the recipient of a Doctor of Commerce, honoris causa, conferred on him by Wits.
